Donor Embryo

Technological advancements in cryopreservation of embryos in ART have enabled infertile couples with untreatable causes to achieve pregnancy through embryo donation. Embryo donation is a procedure that enables embryos that were collected either from couples undergoing fertility treatment or from donor sperm and donor eggs specifically for the purpose of donation to be transferred to infertile patients to help them achieve pregnancy.

Who need embryo donation?
Couples with untreatable infertility that involves both partners.
Recurrent IVF failures due to embryonic factors.
Women with recurrent pregnancy loss (assumed to be related to embryonic factors).
Genetic disorders affecting one or both partners.

What is the source for donor embryos?
Donor embryos may be obtained from an IVF programme, wherein a couple who had conceived with IVF, producing surplus embryos give written consent for cryopreserving their embryos to utilize them for embryo donation to needy infertile couples.

Embryos are also obtained through embryo donation programmes in which embryos are created from donor sperm and donor oocyte specifically for the purpose. The donors are evaluated, investigated, and screened thoroughly before being accepted for gamete (sperm/oocyte) donation.

What is the procedure involved in embryo donation?
The infertile couple need to undergo all the basic evaluations and investigations specific to the ART procedure. The couple shall be explained in detail about the social aspects and legal issues involved with embryo donation. After the written consent is taken from the recipient couple as well as the donor, the recipient woman is prescribed hormonal medication accordingly. The endometrium is prepared with estrogen and progesterone hormones and the donor embryo transfer into the recipient’s uterus is planned. The hormonal supplementation is continued till the pregnancy test and even after the test, in case she tests positive for pregnancy.
