  Donor Sperm

Donor sperm has remained a reliable option to treat male factor infertility over the years. With the advent of micromanipulation techniques in ART (such as ICSI), there has been a decrease in the use of donor sperm for the management of male factor infertility. Even now, the use of donor sperm is in vogue for certain conditions of infertility.

Who benefit from donor sperm?
Men with severe male factor infertility such as non-obstructive azoospermia, abnormal spermatogenesis/no evidence of normal     sperms on testicular biopsy, testicular atrophy, globozoospermia (rounded sperm heads).

Couples with severe male factor infertility (like obstructive azoospermia, severe abnormality in sperm parameters), who cannot     afford ICSI or TESA-ICSI.

Men diagnosed with a genetic problem that can be carried to the offspring.

In cases such as a single woman (without a male partner) who wants to plan pregnancy.

What is the procedure for the selection of donor sperms?
Donor sperms are usually obtained from authorized sperm banks, but a few centres do accept couple bringing their own sperm donor.

A sperm donor should be of legal age and below 40 years. The demographic data is noted, complete medical history taken, and any family history of genetic problems is also recorded. Complete physical examination, screening for communicable diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and genetic conditions are carried out. All relevant blood investigations are done along with the blood grouping and Rh-typing. Once the person is deemed eligible as a sperm donor, the sperm sample is taken, processed, frozen, and stored in the sperm bank. The complete information about the donor is documented.

In what procedures is the donor sperm used?
Donor sperm is used as per indications for infertile couples only after taking their written consent. It is used for artificial insemination in IUI procedures (donor insemination/artificial insemination by donor sperm) as well as in ART procedures to fertilize the eggs.
