Third Party Reproduction
 |
Third party reproduction is a process involving the use of the sperms or eggs or embryos donated by a third person (donor) to enable an infertile couple (intended recipient) to become parents. Third party reproduction also includes surrogacy, wherein the embryos formed from the egg and sperm of the biological parents are transferred into the uterus of another woman who is intended to carry the pregnancy till term. Though third party reproduction is a boon to many infertile couples eager to experience parenthood, it also requires due consideration of emotional, social, ethical and legal issues. |
| |
The points to consider while opting for third party reproduction include: |
| |
Clear understanding of the situation
Appropriate counseling of the infertile couple
Providing full information about the procedure involved with the donor programmes (known or unknown donor)
Discussing about pregnancy related problems (such as miscarriages, prenatal diagnostic tests, congenital fetal anomalies, etc.), especially when planning for surrogacy
Other aspects like financial commitments, legal issues, and written consent |
